Having a cat as a pet can be a lot of fun. You have to help take care of your kitty so it stays healty and happy.
You need two clean bowls for your cat. One is for food. The other is for water. Your cat may eat dry, canned, or other cat food. Make sure the food has the vitamins and good things a cat needs to be healthy. Most cats eat two times a day. They may also get treats between meals!
Some cats have their own beds. Others sleep in a chair or on their owners’ beds. Just make sure your cat has a clean, comfortable place. It should have room to curl up and to stretch out.
Your cat needs a collar with a name tag. That will help if your cat ever gets lost. Some cats will let you attach a leash so you can take a walk together, but many will not. Listen to your cat. It may PURR softly to say it is okay. Or it may growl to tell you it does not want a leash!
Cats spend a lot of time licking their fur to keep themselves clean. Still, you should brush your cat regularly. Make it an enjoyable time. Sing or praise your cat as you brush. Trimming nails is also important. It means less damage from sharp claws.
Your cat needs a litter box. If it is a kitten, make sure the box is low enough for the kitten to step into easily. Keep the box and the area around it clean. Change the litter often. Cats will not use a litter-box area that is not clean.
Cats like to scratch things. So a scratching post is a good idea. Show your cat how it is used. Praise your cat for using it. Give a small treat or stroke the cat lovingly. Now the cat knows that scratching there is okay!
Exercise helps your cat’s heart and lungs. Most cats love to play. Their bodies twist and turn easily. They can jump down from a bookcase or leap up onto a table. Some cats are not very active. They just want to sit in your lap or sleep. Most cats sleep 12-14 hours a day.
Like a person, your pet should see a doctor at least once a year. A veterinarian will make sure your cat is healthy. It may need shots to protect it from getting sick. The vet will tell you ways to keep your pet healthy. Healthy cats live longer.
Like you, your pet needs love. Hug and stroke your cat. Let it know it is special and that you care about it. Give kindness and love to your pet. It will give kindness and love back to you!
