About Judy Garland
Judy Garland is best known for playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. She was an American movie star about 70 years ago and she could sing, dance, and act.
Judy Garland’s name when she was born on June 10, 1922, was Frances Ethel Gumm. She had two older sisters. All three girls and both of their parents were in show business. They put on shows for people at their theater in Minnesota. Later they moved to California, where the girls’ mother tried to get them in movies. They went to a dance school and then traveled all over the country singing together. They eventually changed their name from “The Gumm Sisters” to “The Garland Sisters” and Frances changed her first name to Judy. From that day on, she was Judy Garland, not Frances Gumm.
One day, a man at a movie studio saw Judy perform with her sisters. He thought she would be good in movies, even though she was much shorter than other movie stars (she was only 4 feet 11.5 inches tall). Judy made a lot of movies with a boy named Mickey Rooney, who was also not very tall. They were great together in films and people loved to go see them in shows like Babes in Arms.
Judy was a lovely and talented girl, but some people in Hollywood didn’t think she was glamorous enough to be a star. They made her feel bad about her looks. They also worked her very hard and didn’t let her enjoy being a young girl. Judy struggled for the rest of her life because she never felt "pretty" enough. It’s sad that people made her feel so badly about herself when she was really beautiful and talented.
When she was 16 years old, Judy starred as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and sang the famous song “Over the Rainbow.” She had a lovely voice and everyone enjoyed the movie, especially children. Judy won a special award for her role in the film.
After The Wizard of Oz, Judy made several other popular movies, including one called Meet Me in St. Louis, where she sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” That song is still popular today! Over the next several years, Judy starred in more films, but she began to get sick a lot and eventually couldn’t make as many movies.
Over the years, Judy won awards for her acting and her singing. But even though people loved her and she was so talented, she never felt good about herself. Her sadness caused her to get very sick. Judy moved to England towards the end of her life. Sadly she died there at the age of 47. People all over the world were very sad to hear about her death. It’s a shame that she never realized how special she was and how much people loved her.
Besides her film and music career, Judy also had three children, two girls and one boy. Both of her daughters also sing and act. And even today, children love to watch her play Dorothy as she makes her way to Oz with a lion, a scarecrow, and a tin man.
